If you’re facing challenges caring for your pet — whether financial, behavioral, housing-related, or due to crisis — you’re not alone.

Below are trusted resources to help you keep, care for, and protect your companion animals.

Emergency and crisis help

  • If your animal is in immediate medical distress → Contact your nearest 24/7 emergency veterinary hospital.
  • If you witness animal cruelty or neglect → Call your local animal control or police non-emergency number.
  • Colorado Crisis Services: 1-844-493-TALK (8255) | Offers connections to domestic violence shelters that may have pet accommodations or partnerships.

Low-cost veterinary care

  • Local humane societies and shelters often offer low-cost vaccinations, spay/neuter, and wellness exams — check their websites.
  • Low-cost spay/neuter services are available throughout the state. Email Bergen Spay/Neuter Alliance for more information.

Pet food and supplies

  • Pet food bank locator – Petfinder: Find local shelters that may offer pet food pantries.
  • Colorado Pet Pantry: Holds many open-to-the-public pet food banks throughout the state.
  • Contact your local food bank: many partner with animal welfare groups to distribute pet food.
  • Check with churches, community centers, or mutual aid groups for emergency pet supply assistance.

Behavior and training support

  • Humane Colorado behavior help line: Tips and phone support for common behavior problems. If you attempt to schedule a Behavior Helpline appointment and find that you require more urgent behavior support, please reach out to Humane Colorado at 751.5772and ask for an Emergency Behavior Helpline appointment.
  • IAABC: Directory of certified animal behavior consultants.
  • Search YouTube and podcasts for certified trainers (look for “positive reinforcement” or “fear-free” approaches).

Pet-friendly housing

  • My Pit Bull is Family: Database of breed-inclusive rentals.
  • People with Pets: Nationwide search for pet-friendly apartments.
  • Ask your landlord about pet addendums or pet deposit options before making housing changes.

Financial assistance for veterinary bills

  • RedRover Relief: Grants for urgent veterinary care.
  • The Pet Fund: Financial assistance for non-emergency care.
  • Waggle: Crowdfunding platform for vet bills.

Temporary pet care

    • Pet Assist, Humane Colorado: A temporary safe place for your pet while you’re in the hospital, struggling with access to housing, or need temporary assistance (up to 30 days) for other reasons.
    • SafePlace for Pets (Colorado Springs): Primarily for terminally ill individuals but may assist in DV cases.
    • Until They’re Home – temporary fostering: Connects people who need temporary housing for their pets with foster homes.
    • Also note that most local shelters offer some temporary assistance, so please check with your area shelters.

Rehoming support

  • Rehome by Adopt-a-Pet: Safe, direct pet adoption platform.
  • Home To Home: Helps pets transition directly between homes.
  • Rehome with Love: Navigating the rehoming situation with love.
  • Contact local rescues or breed-specific rescues for rehoming help.

 

Tip: When contacting organizations, have your pet’s basic info ready (age, breed, medical history, vaccination status) and be specific about what help you need — it can speed up assistance.
